Whenever You’re Ready
Movie Poster
One of my professor’s friends, Jenna Harder, was looking for someone to make the movie poster for her latest movie “Whenever You’re Ready.” I’m a movie buff so I was willing to help to create her movie poster.
“Whenever You’re Ready” is the short film about a darkly comedic portrayal of a day in the life of a struggling actress and the unique ways she finds to make it through the day.
Roles
Graphic designer
Problem
Create a poster capturing the content of the movie concept well
Solution
Focus on designing the movie title to show this film is about an actress and some audition
Users
Audiences that are interested in women's films
Final Design
I fully understand the concept of the movie and direction the director wanted to embody on the poster. I picked the photo that is highlighting the actor’s serious face. I wanted to make the poster as the actress look at the audience as if they’re the movie director in front of the camera in the audition. To do that, I made the title look like REC sign using the red dot and brackets.
Process Works
Jenna originally wanted me to make the poster where the main actress stands in the background with the camera in the foreground. However, she was also open to any ideas so I freely explored my own concept after watching her film. I wanted to capture the different mood that the actress went through the whole film so I came up with a few examples like below showing several sides of the main character – manic and gloomy – through the reflection. I also rendered the red record dot on the top left describing it is about an actor and audition.
After Jenna looked at my works, she asked me to show the actor’s face less insane but still manic and serious. She also wants the actor placed in centre. She sent me some examples which definitely helped me to grasp the idea.
Lessons
it was a meaningful experience since I could learn how to embody the concept of the movie on the poster. Also, I’ve learned that typography can do many roles to elaborate on the movie story. Aside from that, I could pick up some information about the movie-making process as well. The key part of this project is that I could learn how to communicate with clients who already had the direction of works on their minds. I don’t know much about film making so it was also challenging to understand the terminology. I never hesitated to ask if anything was unsure so that I could narrow down the idea and reassure the clients. It was a wonderful experience.
