Meditation, mindfulness, spirituality… except for design, these are my favorite topic of life. I do meditation every morning and night which profoundly changes my life. I always thought it would be about meditation if I could make a magazine. And yes, I made it. This magazine is not only limited to topic “meditation”, it includes some psychological articles as well. I’d like readers to get some information about mindfulness and also some little me-time reading this mag. To do that, I gathered imaginative and reassuring illustrations and photos.

Digital Article
As many readers find articles online and read them on a digital device, many publishers change their business platform from physical books to digital forms. To keep pace with this trend, I made a digitally published version of the article “8 Truths about Intuition.” I used Adobe XD to create interactive animation, and it was challenging to assess design elements on printed material and change them to something adaptable to digital format. That being said, I really enjoyed adding some gamification to my article, and it feels like I breathe excitement into it.
Logo
Maum means ‘mind’ in Korean. Many times, I get inspiration from Korean words since they are the most scientific language that sounds beautiful and exotic with deep meaning. I tried both uppercase and lowercase for the nameplate and I chose the lowercase one which has a fluid and geographic shape matching well the sound of ‘maum.’
Mood Board
Flat Plan
Before designing the mag in earnest, I planned the layout of the mag and how many pages would be for each article with a flat plan. Even when the plan is changed, it is very helpful to figure out the composition of the magazine before.
Lessons
Making my own magazine (my first magazine) would be definitely a memorable moment. Picking up my favorite topic and building its concept and design theme was definitely exciting. I’ve designed some booklets such as a pamphlet or corporate annual report before but designing a mag is a whole different experience. Trying different layouts for each feature was very challenging but I insisted to do it as I wanted every article to have its own personality with matching design. From that, I’ve learned so much about grid structure, legibility, and how to let the content shine with my design.
